This recording features a live performance of Mahler’s Symphony No. 7, conducted by Andris Nelsons in January 2023. Since performing Symphony No. 2 in 2018, Nelsons and the Vienna Philharmonic have consistently featured Mahler’s works, primarily at the Salzburg Festival, and this performance of Symphony No. 7 marked its debut at a Vienna Philharmonic subscription concert. Mahler’s Symphony No. 7 is known as a large-scale work consisting of five movements that is notoriously difficult to interpret. Nelsons sheds new light on this challenging piece, fully demonstrating the prowess that has earned him the title of “one of today’s leading conductors.” Particularly in the second and fourth movements—known as the “Nocturnes”—the Vienna Philharmonic’s signature delicate tone stands out, creating a fantastical world. In terms of compositional background, after his Symphonies Nos. 2–4, which incorporated vocal parts, Mahler broke new ground in purely instrumental symphonic music with his Symphonies Nos. 5–7. Symphony No. 7 represents the culmination of this creative phase. The composition took place at the Maiernik mountain retreat on the shores of Lake Wörth, where Mahler spent his summer vacations; this is also where he composed Symphonies Nos. 5–8, as well as the *Lückert Lieder* and *Songs on the Death of a Child*. The retreat still stands today and is known as a site associated with Mahler.
