A rare new recording of Bach’s “Sonatas and Partitas for Solo Violin” with piano accompaniment by Schumann is now available! J.S. Bach’s “Unaccompanied Violin Sonatas and Partitas” form a complete world performed by a single violin, but in 1853—more than 100 years after their creation—Robert Schumann published an arrangement with added piano accompaniment. While this endeavor—which uses the piano to visualize the harmonies and bass lines implied by the solo violin through a 19th-century Romantic lens—is highly intriguing, recordings have been limited until now due to the original works’ high level of perfection and a desire to respect the original scores. Consequently, this new recording by Mario Hossen is exceptionally valuable and will be warmly welcomed. This first volume features Sonatas Nos. 1 and 2 and Partita No. 2. Hossen, a native of Bulgaria, studied violin with Michael Frischenschlager at the University of Music and Performing Arts Vienna and with Gérard Poulet in Paris; he is an international violinist in the lineage of two masters, Yehudi Menuhin and Henryk Szeryng. He has previously released albums of Bach and Handel with Piero Barbareschi on DaVinciClassics. He performs on a 1749 Giovanni Battista Guadagnini violin on loan from the Austrian National Bank.
