New Regency Orchestra, an 18-piece Afro-Cuban big band from London, releases its debut album on the prestigious UK label MR.BONGO! From the mambo era of the 1950s with Rene Hernandez and Tito Puente to the salsa of the 1970s with Rafael Labasta and Orlando Marin, the New Regency Orchestra is a large big band ensemble inspired by the melting pot of Latin music in New York City. The authentic sound, led by horns, and the sharp performances by some of London's finest Latin musicians, is truly for the dance floor. In addition, the music is updated with a contemporary perspective that is unmistakably London. The song "Sahib & Tito," for example, is, as the name suggests, a mix of influences from Sahib Shihab and Tito Puente. The combination of good old-fashioned big band Latin with a post-club jazz sensibility makes it a must for dancers and DJs alike.
