Ton Koopman's new disc The latest recording by Ton Koopman & the Amsterdam Baroque Orchestra, including the world premiere recording of a different version of Handel's cantata HWV 171 (HWV 171a), is now available. This is the first recording in Copeman's vast repertoire of Handel's cantatas in Italian. This remarkable disc includes the world premiere recording of HWV 171a, a recently discovered variant of Handel's cantata "Are you faithful, are you chaste? "HWV 171 In 2015, a variant (171a) of Handel's cantata HWV 171, "Are you faithful, are you chaste?" was discovered. What a surprise, it was found among the various autograph documents in Copeman's possession. This cantata is a lament for unrequited love, and Handel composed it for soprano.In the known versions of HWV 171, the only instruments in the ensemble are the two violins and the bass continuo, but in this newly discovered manuscript of HWV 171a, the oboe is also present. Conversely, the introductory sonata (instrumental) movement present at the beginning of HWV 171 is absent in HWV 171a; HWV 171 was completed in May 1707, but this version of HWV 171a was written in late 1706, probably in Venice or Rome. It is very unusual for a work to be discovered today that was composed by Handel during the Italian period but for which no documentation is extant.
