Description:
Don Rendell has been a leading figure in British modern jazz for more than half a century, actively involved in and a key witness to major developments in the music, from small clubs and back rooms to the most famous stages in the country. From his early performances in London's West End and with the Don Rendell-Ian Carr Quintet in the 50s and 60s to his more discreet performances in the 70s and 80s, his assured and consistent playing is highly regarded by his peers. He was one of the few British artists to join Blue Note Records, and played on some of the most distinctive and distinctive British jazz albums by Michael Garrick, Stan Tracy, Amancio Delva, and Neal Ardley. Rendell eschewed the free and electric fusion styles popular in the late 60s, sticking instead to an acoustic sound centered on melody and rhythm, but he was equally averse to describing himself as a mere "bopper. This album, "Space Walk," was in many ways both a graduation album and a turning point for Rendell, with its original release in 1972.Described by Neal Ardley as "a rare Diaghilev-like figure," this is Rendell's last work with legendary producer Dennis Preston of Lansdowne Studios, who led many important figures of the British jazz scene into the studio that no one else would record. It was also Rendell's last project for EMI Columbia and his last work as a leader for a major record company. After this work, Rendell recorded for smaller independent labels such as Spotlite. However, this album was both a farewell to one chapter and a roadmap for the next.
