Description:
This is too good to be true! Lau Lo, leader of the British band Wax Machine, which has gained a cult following in some quarters, returns to his roots in Brazil for this new release on the prestigious UK label Far Out Recordings! The album is a mix of elegant strings and trippy electronics, mirage-like chamber bossa, ambient folk, fuzzy tropicália, and majestic MPB sounds.... Fans of Brazilian psychedelic music such as Caetano Veloso, Gilberto Gil's Tropicália works, and Artur Vercaye, as well as Shintaro Sakamoto and the Avalanches, and of course Bruno Belli, Sessa, and the other artists released on the same Far Out label, can also enjoy this album. This album is highly recommended for fans of contemporary Brazilian psychedelic~alterna rock such as Leonardo Marquez and Moons. * * * Lau Lo's family was born in São Paulo, Brazil, but moved to Europe as immigrants when he was a teenager, but life was tough and he was able to find factory and cleaning work, first in northern Italy and later in Brighton on the south coast of England.Says Lau, "We were never able to return to our hometown, so my connection to Brazil consists mainly of childhood memories and a passion for Brazilian music from the 60s and 70s." Gradually finding himself in Brighton's avant-garde, free-thinking circle of artists and musicians, the young non-binary singer-songwriter Lau formed the band Wax Machine, which produced three cult albums between 2020 and 2011. The band produced three cult albums between 2020 and 2011, which showed the influence of British psychedelic music pioneers such as progressive folk, rock, and jazz, as well as glimpses of his roots in Brazilian music. With "Cabana" under his own name, Lau fully pursued his longing for his homeland. The title of the album refers to a cabin. The album is named after the cabin in the garden of his house where he recorded the album. As the name suggests, the album's contents are extremely personal, about memory, self-discovery, and imagination.A total of 10 songs carry melancholy and hope with mirage-like chamber bossa, ambient folk, fuzzy tropicaria, and sometimes majestic MPB sounds. Elegant strings and trippy electronics fuse with a delicate yet quietly confident voice, dreaming of a utopia filled with nature and wildlife, while speaking bitterly in English and Portuguese about polluted city life. As well as musical "drifting," Lau's migration could be said to have created another Brazil. The mythical place in Lau's mind was "a place where the sunshine and joy of childhood were still untouched. Lau continues. The music may sound as if it came out of a parallel universe, Brazil, rather than the contemporary landscape. I have recently rediscovered Brazil, and I try to return there as often as possible to stay connected to different parts of the world and to myself."
