Description:

Jorge Rossy, a member of the Brad Meldor Trio in the 1990s, became famous as a drummer, but he originally also played the piano, and in 2000, he began his career as a pianist in earnest. Jorge has a surprising background, having originally enrolled in Berklee College of Music as a trumpet player. This album is a quintet work using his own vibraphone. Jorge has several works as a vibraphonist, and in his quartets with Michael Cannan and others, he mainly plays standards, but "Stay There" (2016) features almost the same members as on this album (Peter Bernstein on guitar), and is mainly original compositions. This album is full of greats! Mark Turner on tenor, Al Foster on drums, and Doug Wace on bass, a force to be reckoned with in the contemporary NY jazz scene. Seven of the ten tracks are Jorge originals, two are Al Foster originals, and the last is a Thelonious Monk tune.Although there was no superficial excitement on the surface throughout the entire performance, it was still a group of virtuosos, and the many casual exchanges under the surface were truly outstanding and interesting. Mark Turner, as usual, played coolly and swaggeringly, while Jorge played with a low volume and a singsongy feel, creating dynamics in the ensemble with his contrasting solos. Al Foster's flexible, responsive, and witty drumming makes the sound more three-dimensional. Monk's "Introspection," the tenth and final song, is swingy. Each solo was played in a simple and tasteful manner, and the Monk-like approach on the guitar was particularly interesting. This is a piece that should be listened to carefully with the volume turned up all the way through.
