Sisters of Mercy, led by Andrew Eldritch, has been leading the Gothic Rock/Positive Punk scene with its dark aesthetic.After releasing several singles and EPs on their own Merciful Release label, they signed with Warner Music in 1984. With their inorganic rhythms, melodious guitar sounds, and dark vocals that transport the listener into a world of darkness, they have been called the "King of Gothic Rock" and "King of Goths. Their shocking debut album "First and Last and Always," released in 1985, is now being reissued in two formats: a luxury 4-CD analog box set commemorating the 40th anniversary of its release, and a color analog disc featuring songs from the original album. The Sisters of Mercy were formed in Leeds in 1980 by guitarist Gary Marks and vocalist Andrew Eldridge. They had previously released singles and EPs on their own label, but in 1984 they signed with Warner and made their debut in March 1985 with the album "First and Last and Always," the culmination of their previous five years of independent work. Their debut album reached #14 on the UK Albums Chart, and the band quickly established a cult following.By this time, guitarist Wayne Hussey and bassist Craig Adams had also joined the band, but both later left the band to form The Mission, another British gothic rock band.
