Eccentric, versatile, and typically English bourgeois, Sir Thomas Beecham was a self-taught conductor with a highly individual style and taste, a man of elegance and charm. Not only did he perform energetically on stages around the world, but he conveyed a wide range of classical masterpieces from Handel to Stravinsky, as well as works by French composers such as Debussy, Saint-Saëns, and Bizet. His "Carmen" remains a historic recording. He also played an important role in 20th century British music, performing the music of his friend, the composer Frederick Delius, who founded the London Philharmonic Orchestra in 1932 and the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra in 1946. This box set includes all of his rich stereo recordings for Columbia and HMV, including a 1934 experimental stereo recording of the first movement of Mozart's Symphony No. 41 made in April 1934. Few musicians have single-handedly contributed as much to building resources for music performance as Sir Thomas Beecham. He was unique in the history of classical music. Self-taught in conducting, he inherited his father's wealthy Beecham Pharmaceuticals fortune and used it to revolutionize the English music world. By founding orchestras and organizing opera seasons, he left an indelible mark on 20th century music. Affable, brilliant, charming, yet always outspoken, witty, and devoted to music, he was one of the finest musical industrialists ever to come out of England. This box set contains all of his rich stereo recordings on Columbia Graphene and HMV.The albums respect the original combinations of the time, but in cases where the recording time is short, the two albums are combined on one CD. Many of the recordings were made during the transition period when the recording industry was moving from mono to stereo, and some of the recordings that were originally released in mono were later re-released with stereo recordings present on only some tracks. Each is recorded with the most recently mastered sound sources, and some have been newly remastered for this box. Major works in this box include the legendary "Carmen" (starring Victoria de los Ángeles), Mozart's "Abduction from the Hind Palace," "Peer Gynt" with Ilse Holvek as Solveig, Berlioz's "Symphonie fantastique," various Diliath works, French and Romanticism album (featuring Fauré's "Suite Dolly" and "Suite Carmen I"), Franck's Symphony in D minor, R=Korsakov's "Scheherazade," and the famous "Lollipops" album. *Lyric translation is not included.
