Description:
Canterbury music stands out as a unique force in the progressive rock scene. Formed by members of the four bands that epitomize that sound—Caravan, Gong, Matching Moles, and Egg—Hatfield and the North can truly be called a Canterbury supergroup.
They signed with the up-and-coming label Virgin Records and released their debut album, *Hatfield and the North*, in 1974. Although it received critical acclaim, it failed to achieve commercial success. The following year, in 1975, they released their second album, *The Rotters' Club*, but disbanded immediately after the tour ended. In 2005, the band reunited—without Dave Stewart but with Alex Maguire in his place—and embarked on a small-scale world tour. During this tour, their June 25, 2006, performance in New York was recorded and broadcast for a local radio program. This album is a live recording based on that broadcast, capturing the entire show, including two sets and an encore.
Although 30 years had passed since their heyday, the members’ skills had not waned, and they delivered a superb performance that captured the essence of Canterbury music. The setlist also features solo numbers by Richard Sinclair and Pip Pyle, as well as songs from Matching Mole, the band in which Phil Miller was a member. As two members passed away after this tour, this is a precious live album documenting Hatfield and the North’s final live performance.
