Chicago established a new style known as "brass rock" in the rock scene by prominently featuring a horn section sound. Despite numerous lineup changes, the band has continued to release hit songs and albums with a sound that has evolved with the times, and they remain active to this day. Now, Chicago’s live archive is being released on CD!
Their debut album, *The Chicago Transit Authority*, released in 1969, reached No. 17 on the US album charts (No. 9 on the UK album charts) and went double platinum. The single “Questions 67/68” charted at No. 71 on the US Hot 100, marking a smooth start to their career. Then, in 1970, their second album, *Chicago II (Chicago and the 23 Vows)* (original title: *Chicago*), reached No. 4 on the US album charts and went gold, catapulting them to stardom and establishing the brass rock genre in the music scene.
The band continued to thrive, but in 1978, guitarist Terry Kath died in an accidental gun discharge, and the band fell into a slump thereafter. However, in 1980, they switched record labels and produced an album with David Foster as producer. The album *Love Me Tomorrow: Chicago 16* (original title: *Chicago 16*), released in 1982, shifted to a sound centered on love ballads; despite this, two hit singles propelled the album to No. 9 on the U.S. charts, earning it a Platinum certification. The band then embarked on the *Chicago 16 Tour*, consisting of 77 shows exclusively in the U.S. and Germany. Their performance as the headliner at a rock festival held in Dortmund, Germany, on December 19—the final show of the tour—was recorded and broadcast as a TV and radio program for promotional purposes in Europe. This album is a live recording based on that broadcast, and the setlist from that day—including medleys, cover songs, and encores—captures the concert in its entirety.
Centered on classic hits and featuring two hit tracks from their latest album, this live album—a sort of “Best Of” compilation at that point in time—is a comprehensive archive that captures the full scope of Chicago’s concerts during that era!
