The enigmatic Japanese-American artist HARUMI’s cult psychedelic masterpiece from 1968 is being reissued with a brand-new remaster! Recorded in New York in 1968—at the height of the psychedelic era spanning 1967 to 1968—this is the sole album by HARUMI (aka Harumi), a Japanese man living in the U.S. believed to be the son of a Japanese businessman stationed there. A rare holy grail of psychedelia—delicate and almost fragile—that fuses an Eastern sense of melody with soft American folk-rock and the imagination of late-1960s studio music. Produced by Tom Wilson—who worked on albums by Bob Dylan, Simon & Garfunkel, The Velvet Underground, and The Mothers of Invention—this East-meets-West freak-out album was hailed by some critics at the time as “Japan meets Greenwich Village.” However, with no band credits listed, it vanished into obscurity, remaining a mystery. Over the decades, this record has established a cult status among collectors and researchers of obscure psychedelic and acid folk music. The original pressing is extremely rare, and the name “HARUMI” has become one of the most enigmatic names in the late-60s underground scene. The original analog release is a massive two-LP set. In particular, the track “SAMURAIMEMORIES”—a masterpiece of experimental poetry rock that blends an organ-driven, intensely groovy, improvisational jazz-rock with a generational interview and conversation involving four family members (parents and an older sister) conducted in Japanese—would have been difficult for American listeners and critics. It is not hard to imagine that it came across as a completely avant-garde anomaly. The opening line, spoken by the mother—who apparently had a strong accent from the Chugoku region—"Ah, this time, we’re going to release this on a record for the Japanese market, so I really think this will be the first time people in Japan get to hear it..."—suggests a misunderstanding? This masterpiece remained entirely unfulfilled at the time. For this reissue, Grammy-nominated mastering engineer Jessica Thompson has remastered the album with a focus on faithfully reproducing the depth and dynamics of the original recording. It will be reissued with the original artwork restored.
