In 2012, the up-and-coming label *Playwright* burst onto the Japanese jazz scene like a comet. This album brings together artists released by the label—whose name means “playwright”—featuring all-new recordings of cover songs. Led by foxcaptureplan, who have just released their third album, the lineup includes the steel pan orchestra WAIWAISTEELBAND, as well as the piano trio PRIMITIVEARTORCHESTRA, who are making a spectacular debut with a simultaneous release (available first at Tower Records). bohemianvoodoo, whose second album *SCENES* (released in 2012) continues to enjoy long-term sales and is expected to release a highly anticipated new album by the end of 2014; Tres-men, who continue to pursue the next generation of dance music; and Immigrant's Bossa Band, who comfortably blend elements of R&B and hip-hop with a foundation of jazz and Brazilian music. And as a huge surprise, PlaywrightPlayers—formed specifically for this project by gathering elite members from each band—and TRI4TH, a rising star in the jazz scene garnering acclaim both domestically and internationally, make a surprise appearance! Is this a hint of what’s to come from Playwright in the near future…? In any case, here are eight tracks featuring the hottest artists of the moment, each reinterpreting their musical roots in their own unique way! The artwork features photographs by world-traveling photographer Manpei Miyamoto.
