Victoria Mulova’s First Release on SIGNUM! Schubert on a Guadagnini! Victoria Mlová, one of the greatest violinists of our time and the “Queen of the Violin,” has signed with the long-established British independent label “Signum Classics,” which celebrates its 25th anniversary in 2022! Possessing rare versatility and a sincere musicality, Mlová has continually expanded her musical horizons, ranging from Baroque and Classical music to Brazilian music, fusion, and contemporary music, including experimental works. Her landmark first release on Signum is a collection of Beethoven’s violin sonatas (PONYX4221 / Selected by the BBC Music Magazine’s “Chamber Choice”), and now she presents Schubert in collaboration with Alastair Beatson (Alasdair Beatson)—a Scottish pianist, fortepianist, and chamber musician who has maintained a brilliant career—who previously delivered a superb recording of Beethoven’s Violin Sonatas! The instrument used is the renowned Italian instrument by G.B. Guadagni, which garnered much attention in his series of Bach recordings (Sonata Collection [OONYX4020] and Unaccompanied Sonatas & Partitas [OONYX4040])—a combination of gut strings and a classical bow. The fortepiano is a replica of a 1819 Graf instrument crafted by Paul McNulty. This recording features a performance on historical instruments—still a rarity for Schubert—and includes three works spanning the composer’s final decade. Please take note of Murova’s overwhelming performance, in which she overcomes the Fantasia’s terrifying virtuosity with consistent technique and artistry. Incidentally, since Fantasia D. 934 was also recorded on a Stradivarius for the album *Recital* (ONYX4015), a collaboration with Katia Rabek, listeners can enjoy an intriguing side-by-side comparison to see how Murova’s artistry has evolved since then.
