This is the 58th collection in Liszt's complete piano music series. The works on the album include "Five Hungarian Folksongs" and other works related to various countries. The "Neapolitan Canzone" was written in 1842. It is usually performed in the second draft (track 17), which was revised in 1848 and transposed a semitone lower to make it easier to play, but this album also includes the first draft version (track 1) written in the original key of F-sharp major. Five Hungarian Folksongs" was written for the 50th anniversary celebration of Liszt's career as a pianist, and is an expression of his love for Hungary. Other pieces feature Czech, old French, and Polish folk song motifs (track 12 has the same melody as Chopin's "The Maiden's Wish"), and familiar melodies such as "La Marseillaise" and "God Save the Queen" appear in splendid costumes. Csabay, who performs, is a Hungarian-born pianist currently based in London. He is a master of dazzling technique. Naxos Japan
