Description:
Czerny, a student of Beethoven, friend, and teacher of Liszt, was known primarily as a composer of "piano exercises," but only recently has the true value of his many works begun to be discovered. It is said that Czerny was trying to turn into a religious composer in his later years, and his numerous religious works have not yet been fully researched. Czerny's father, Wenzel, was originally a clergyman at a Benedictine monastery near Prague, and he was familiar with organ music. He was asked to compose "Exercises" to expand the repertoire of the organ, which was being actively built at the time, and to train its players. The "Short Voluntaries" are written in a contemplative style so that they can be played during worship services, while the "12 Voluntaries" are written in a technical style with emphasis on counterpoint exercises. These are masterpieces comparable to Mendelssohn's works, which were very popular at the time. Naxos Japan
