Description:
At the beginning of the 19th century, George Thomson (1757-1851), a dedicated Scottish amateur musician and publisher, wondered what he could do to popularize his country's folk songs. The idea came to him to have folk songs arranged by composers active in Vienna at the time. He collected folk songs not only from Scotland but also from all over Europe and asked Haydn, Pleyel, and Beethoven (1770-1827) to arrange them for publication, hoping to make a fortune. Thomson first contacted Beethoven in 1803. Beethoven responded to Thomson's request to write a sonata using Irish folk tunes, which Thomson promptly completed and sent to Beethoven. Their collaboration resulted in more than 100 works, not only "piano pieces with violin or flute accompaniment," as in this album, but also a wide variety of vocal pieces. The virtuoso flutist Gallois, based on the performance methods of the time, freely improvises and embellishes these simple pieces, transforming them into gems of music. Naxos Japan
