This is the fourth volume of string quartets by the composer Mejer, who hails from Kraków, Poland. In this volume, please enjoy four early works, ranging from the First Quartet, composed in 1963, to the Fourth Quartet, composed in 1974. No. 1, with its strikingly memorable opening, was composed while Meyel was a student at the Kraków Academy of Music. Strongly influenced by his teachers at the time, Penderecki and Nadia Boulanger, the music leaves a vivid impression despite its austere quality. No. 2 takes a slightly different approach; it is a short, single-movement piece that begins with unisons reminiscent of Bartók, with the sounds gradually intertwining. No. 3 returns to a three-movement form, but the style has become even more free. It is as if all the sounds are condensed and focused on a single point. No. 4 is dynamic music that seems to explore the interplay between stillness and movement. Can you sense the progress and transformation in Meyer’s work over these 12 years? Naxos Japan
