Composer, conductor, and multi-instrumentalist. David Amram's career spans more than 70 years. His latest work, Voyage, is a three-movement tour of nine cities that are "personal Meccas" for Amram: the first movement, through Cairo, Lahore, and Athens, expresses a sense of time travel to ancient times; the second movement pays homage to African American music and Native American roots, The third movement is a tour of Cork, London, and Quebec, with which he has deep connections. The piano sonata is the most jazz-influenced of his works. It consists of a first movement with blues fragments, a bluesy second movement, and a third movement, Theme and Variations, derived from a piece he composed for a Shakespearean play. The Violin Sonata consists of an improvisatory first movement, a second movement with a prayer-like melody similar to a Jewish "niggun," and a third movement with a theme and variations inspired by a film collaboration with Jack Kerouac, creating a mosaic of New York musical culture.
