Description:

Two Debussy recordings in stereo, rare among Cluytens' recordings, are newly reissued from the original analog master tapes in Japan. The colorful and exquisite presentation of the "images" is remarkable. Roussel's work is also included in the margins. Debussy tends to be less popular than Ravel among the many recordings that Cluytens made for EMI. While French music itself has been recorded in mono and re-recorded in stereo, Debussy had only three stereo recordings, including these two. We do not know how these pieces came to be recorded in his later years, but the performances heard here are rare, with a graceful and elegant performance that makes excellent use of Debussy's sense of color. The master was digitized at 192kHz/24bit from the original analog master tapes in the original country for this release, and mastered separately for the SACD and CD layers. New commentary is included. This is a permanent edition. Since the first issue of this project, which featured Beethoven's complete symphonies with the Berlin Philharmonic (TDSA1), Cluytens has reissued several works, including operas.Debussy is one of the most popular of the many Debussy recordings that Cluytens made for EMI, but compared to Ravel, the number of Debussy recordings tends to be extremely small. What is common to all recordings from this period, including Bizet (TDSA286) released at the same time, is the same earnest attitude toward the music and the variety of his musical views. In addition, the sound of the French orchestras of the time is truly wonderful, and the fact that there are many masterpieces in which wind instruments play an active role is even more appealing. The sound of the Orchestre de la Conservatoire de Paris, which had some of the best players in France at that time, has already been lost, and the revival of this sound, which can only be heard in the remaining recordings, is nothing less than the most recent reissue of this work. The attractive tones of the flute, oboe, and especially the bassoon and horn appear again and again. In Debussy against Bizet, the unique nuances of French music are added to the mix. Please enjoy the exquisite pauses. The master recording is clear and of high quality. The unique nuances of the string instruments are also a big attraction. (1/2)
