Based in Valencia, an ancient city in eastern Spain,Capella de Ministrellas has been uncompromisingly exploring the state of music from the Middle Ages to pre-modern times and crystallizing it into highly thematic programs. The keyword for their new exploration of the Middle Ages is "relics. Relics, which were considered to be relics or parts of the bodies of Jesus, the Savior of the world, and other saints, were the spiritual support that illuminated the unstable lives of the people of medieval Europe. Not a few of them are from the Notre-Dame school of music and courtly poetry. In light of the fact that Saint King Louis IX received many relics from the Byzantine emperor, the successor of ancient Rome, in 13th century France, where the Notre-Dame school of music and court poets (trouvere) were active, the performers refer not only to Spanish but also French music historical documents. The 12 tracks are composed of medieval verses in praise of the relics, sung in a fresh voice, with the sound of bowed strings and stringed instruments that play delicate tunes, bagpipes and various percussion instruments whose virtuosity is somewhere between rustic and refined.Even before you get to the extensive booklet commentary, you will inevitably be struck by the overwhelming musicality of the elaborate engineering of this rich old music disc.
