In composing his operas, Donizetti placed great importance not only on the moments in which the soloist could flourish, but also on the ensemble. Although the repertoire of bel canto operas revolved around the prima donna, he also paid attention to tenors and especially to roles in the lower register, adding depth to his works by employing baritone Giorgio Ronconi and bass Luigi Labrache, who were active at the time. This album focuses on the importance of baritone arias and ensemble in Donizetti's operas: baritone Nicola Alaimo, winner of the 2016 Abbiati Prize, brings the virtuous, heroic, and romantic characters to life; Giacomo Sagripanti The Florence May Festival Orchestra, conducted by Giacomo Sagripanti, provides the backdrop for the flowing music.
