Description:
Austrian composer Franz Schmidt is known for his opera "Notre Dame" and symphonies. He studied cello with Ferdinand Hermesberger and was an excellent cellist, playing in the Vienna Court Opera Orchestra, and also showed great talent as a pianist. However, Schmidt was more interested in the organ than the piano, and left several works for this instrument, but not so many for the piano, only one piece for two-handed piano, "Romance". The others, including the "Piano Quintet," were all written for Paul Wittgenstein, who lost his right hand in the war. Pianist Karl Andreas Corey performs the original "Romance" and "Toccata" on this album, and also arranges three of his organ works for piano, substituting sustain pedals for the sustained notes on the piano and other various devices to pay respect to the composer.
