Konstantin Legamey, born in 1907 in Khiu, Ukraine, of Swiss-Polish Jewish descent, was a composer, pianist, and music critic, A man of many talents, he was also a lecturer in Indian languages at Warsaw University from 1936. The quintet was begun in 1942, when he joined the Polish resistance movement, and premiered in secret on June 6, 1944, the day of the Normandy landings.The quartet is reminiscent of Messiaen's "Quartet for the End of the World," including its unusual composition, but it is a moving work with a heavy air of the times, and the virtuosity of the members is on full display throughout.
