In the 16th century, church music by Palestrina and Lassus, as well as secular music by Verdolo and Janukan, were often composed as polyphonic pieces with three to five voices singing separate melodies. However, various historical documents from the time indicate that such songs were also performed solo with a single lute on more than a few occasions. The Slovenian-born new generation virtuoso Bol Zuriyan and French old-time singer Romain Boclair, who have already produced a splendid album (RIC403, domestic edition NYCX-10071) of secular songs by Josquin Desprez using the same technique with lute for many voices, have teamed up this time to produce a new album of songs by Josquin Desprez, which is a new generation of virtuoso singers. The two singers alone will interpret a program that follows the passage of time from dusk to dawn, featuring Italian madrigales, French chansons, and Spanish songs about the troubles of love at night when one is alone. The two singers alone carefully interpreted a program that traces the passage of time from dusk to dawn, crystallizing in a vivid performance a sense of solitude that is closer to contemporary human sensibilities than the singing of many singers. In addition to the warmth of Boeckler's beautiful voice, Zuriyan's meticulous interpretation of Gesualdo's Madrigale on lute solo (RIC434/NYCX-10311, specially selected by "Record-Geijutsu" magazine) is also superb.The Beatles' "Blackbird," which was unexpectedly included as an encore after a series of poignant verses, was also beautiful and natural.
