Josef Tull was born to a Jewish rabbi and raised in Berlin. In 1937, he was invited to teach piano, music theory, and composition at the Palestinian Conservatory of Music in Jerusalem, where he began his career. He eventually founded the Israel Electronic Music Center. He eventually founded the Israel Electronic Music Center and served as the Israeli representative to the International Society for Contemporary Music. He reigned as a major figure in the Israeli music world. While his style was based on the European tradition he had studied in his youth, he tried to create a new national style that differed from European (especially German) modernism, and sometimes actively adopted Jewish melodies. The six symphonies were written over a period of about 40 years beginning in 1952, and with the exception of the first symphony, which is in three movements, they are all in a single movement, concise, focused, and expressive to the extreme.
