Description:

The shocking debut work of a solitary jazz singer "mJ". The sweet, thick, overtone-filled voice of the man who made his CD debut within a year of starting to sing jazz is supported by talented musicians. This is the only album where you can listen to real jazz recorded simultaneously with live performance as a contemporary new work. No need to say "Japanese. The essence of jazz vocals transcends nationality, gender, and race, and resonates in the semicircular canals of humanity. The baritone voice, thick, sweet, and full of overtones, like the sound of Eric Clapton's front pickup during the Cream era or the sound of analog synths at a Kraftwerk show, is full of universal magic. Speaking of magic, the talent of the singer, who made her debut within a year of starting to sing jazz, is also magical. Backing him up are the jazz world's most talented musicians: Koji Toyama (bass), Kiyoshi Morita (piano), and Rito Nozaki (guitar). Toyama's arrangements shine, Morita's piano adds color, and Nozaki's cutting provides rhythmic guidance. Nozaki's Epiphone Zenith brings back to life the splendor of the acoustic jazz rhythm guitar, something we have almost forgotten. Not only standard jazz, but also Bacharach's world as a message to the recent world situation on M-6, and the only original Japanese song on the bonus track. This is beautiful, as if Haruomi Hosono's genes were nurtured in jazz manners. No overdubs, everyone including the vocalist played in the same room (no booths), and the recording was done without losing any of the jazz air. Amazingly, the work was initially done on analog tape. However, due to wow flutter, they gave up after only two songs. Those two songs can now be heard on YouTube. Satchmo, Crosby, Sinatra, Bennett, and Blossom Dearie. mJ gives us the same kind of encounter with them here in Japan. At the beginning of this article, I wrote in an awkward manner that "Kunis and Seibetsu have nothing to do with each other," but let me be honest. As a person living in Japan today, I am very happy that there is a jazz singer who can sing jazz so well in today's Japan. The jacket featuring a coffee cup made by Koji Arata, a ceramic artist who passed away the other day, is also a nice touch.
