The Beta Band was billed as "Scotland's answer to Beck" and gained a devoted following in the late 90's and early 00's. The band's first CD, "The Three EPs" (released in 1998), has been remastered and reissued to commemorate its 20th anniversary. At the time of the EPs, the band's popularity was heating up so rapidly that they even performed at Glastonbury. The band's popularity grew so rapidly at the time of the EPs that they did not wait for a studio album, but made their album debut with this anomalous work. Their omnivorous sound is truly unique, mixing folk, country, dub, psychedelic, film music, and hip-hop.Popular among musicians such as Radiohead's Thom Yorke, Oasis' Noel Gallagher, and The Verve's Nick McCabe, the band was expected to break out as a crossover act that transcended the boundaries between dance and rock. The Beta Band was often called "the next Radiohead. However, the band disbanded in 2004 without seeing a full-fledged breakthrough. Singer Steve Mason has since gone solo, collaborating with Dennis Bovell and working with Jimmy Edgar (aka Machine Drums) as Black Affairs, and is still active to this day. The other members formed The Aliens.Twenty years after their debut, their dream was taken over by Vicors Music of France. This album was awarded "Best New Reissue" by Pitchfork in the United States.
