The complete symphonies from Anner Bylsma’s “Schubert Edition” (KKC-5445)—winner of the Grand Prize at the 53rd Record Academy Awards in 2015—have been released on SACD. Since the analog LP (KKC-1054) is also available, the release of this SACD hybrid disc means that listeners can now experience this recording on nearly all major formats currently on the market, including CD, Blu-ray Audio, high-resolution downloads, and LP. This release, brimming with the Berlin Philharmonic’s characteristic thoroughness and confidence, makes no compromises whatsoever—neither in performance nor in sound quality. “There is no point in comparing Schubert to Mozart or Beethoven; we should express Schubert’s unique musical world,” says Annerose. Particularly with regard to the early symphonies, he does not view the works as a historical progression but presents music that has been polished down to the finest detail as complete, individual compositions. For Annerose, this is her second complete recording of Schubert’s symphonies, following her first with the Concertgebouw Orchestra. In addition to this, Annerose has recorded individual symphonies with the Vienna Symphony Orchestra and the Berlin Philharmonic. Speaking about Schubert’s works, he remarked, “Schubert was always a close friend and the embodiment of music,” suggesting that these performances held special significance for him personally. Arnonkur announced his retirement on December 5, 2015, citing physical reasons, and passed away just three months later.
