In the dawn of rock ’n’ roll, the man who played guitar with the wildest intensity in the world: Mickey Baker. While supporting legendary performances by Ray Charles (M-21) and Ruth Brown (M-15) as a studio musician, he also scored a massive hit with “Love Is Strange” (M-19) as part of the duo Mickey & Sylvia. He also possessed an intellectual side, serving as the author of a guitar instruction book that would later become a bible for guitarists worldwide, as well as a renowned guitar teacher. His free-spirited playing, sometimes described as “unconventional,” is the very essence of a fierce collision between intellect and wildness—a “calculated, intellectual rampage,” so to speak. This album condenses the footprints of his golden era in New York. The true value of those dazzling NYC sessions—recorded before he moved to France and became a key figure in French pop—is now revealed!
