The latest work by one of the finest trumpeters of our time, Marquis Hill, is now available on CD only in Japan. Since winning the Thelonious Monk Competition in 2014 and making his major label debut in 2016, Marquis Hill's latest release is even more sophisticated, with a mellow, R&B/Hip-Hop manner while respecting his jazz roots. The Chicago native, who has been a major force in the scene for the past few years along with his friend Makaya McRaven and others, has been performing with a number of members from the area on his latest one-horn effort. This is a concept album that calls for an awareness of the rituals and routines in people's lives. The album is a continuation of the masterpiece "Modern Flows Vol. 2" (2018), "Love Tape" (2019), and "Soul Sign" (2020), which blended elements of R&B/hip-hop, and the previous album "New After "New Gospel Revisited" (2021), a series of works blending R&B/hip-hop elements, the sound of this direction is further developed in a seamless and cosmic manner.Delicate tones are integrated into the loose groove and soundscape. Marquis Hill plays trumpet/flugelhorn as well as fantastic effects and spoken word~rap. The members are Michael King (p, rhodes, org), a Chicago native and member of Zio Croker's band, Unius Paul (b), a friend of Makaya McRaven, who will accompany Makaya to Japan in April, and Indie Buzz (ds). The featured artists include Braxton Cook (vo, as), who just released his latest album with a sweet neo-soul flavor (also featuring Marquis Hill), Joel Ross (vib), who is now an integral part of his sound, and Sarah Vaughan International, the first male singer to perform at the International Jazz Vocal Competition. G. Thomas Allen (vo), a beautiful falsetto who won the Sarah Vaughan International Vocal Jazz Competition, Chicago singer and multi-instrumentalist Pheliox, and singer/songwriter Ariesfoolmoon are all quite strong.
