[Tower Records "Sony Classical" Special Selection 10th Season] "New World", the only performance by the Boston Symphony Orchestra, is a lifetime masterpiece by Arthur Fiedler, a famous conductor who devoted his life to the promotion of classical music. Arthur Fiedler (1894-1979) was a master American conductor who led the Boston Pops Orchestra for about half a century from 1930 and continued to promote the excellence of classical music throughout the world. Fiedler recorded many albums with the Boston Pops, but the only recordings he made under the name of the Boston Symphony Orchestra were Dvořák's "From the New World" and the overture to "Carnival," and these two recordings made in 1970 were almost his last for RCA before he moved to DG. Fiedler, who knew every detail of the works, freely drove the orchestra he knew so well, and this is a standard performance with universal persuasiveness that will satisfy all kinds of listeners. The tempo is fast, and the brass and woodwind solos are dynamic and brilliant, conveying the pride of a prestigious orchestra. The fact that this is the Boston Symphony Orchestra's only session recording of "From the New World" so far also adds to the value of this masterful performance.
