Gioconda de Vito

Description:

A recording of her signature Beethoven piece has been rediscovered!!! De Vito’s early repertoire has finally seen the light of day. One of the most popular female violinists of all time, Gioconda de Vito (1907–1994)—one of the most popular female violinists of her time—is set to be released as a new title in audite’s acclaimed “Deutsches Radio Kultur Edition” series, featuring a superb high-fidelity restoration of rare broadcast recordings made in Berlin between 1951 and 1954. De Vito retired from active performance in her mid-50s, leaving behind only about 30 recordings in her lifetime. Furthermore, it is said that she regretted during her lifetime that she never made a studio recording of Beethoven’s Violin Concerto—the very piece that cemented her popularity. That very Beethoven performance has been preserved in a live broadcast recording from Berlin in 1954! The recording is in excellent condition, and thanks to audite’s meticulous remastering, listeners can enjoy a mature performance that exudes the noble lyricism so characteristic of De Vito. The RIAS Symphony Orchestra, led by Georg Ludwig Jochum (Eugen Jochum’s brother), delivers an exceptionally elegant performance—carefully attuned to De Vito’s tempo control and fingering—that beautifully complements the solo part. This Beethoven recording, which best captures De Vito’s charm—a blend of precision and free-spirited expressiveness—can truly be considered both a historical legacy and a significant recording. Note that while the cadenzas in the first and third movements are not credited to a specific composer, according to the audite label, they were likely composed by De Vito himself. These cadenzas are exceptionally captivating, expressing Beethoven’s themes through virtuosic double stops while playing the sweet melodies in a singing style. (The cadenza for the second movement is by Kreisler.) The B-sides are Brahms’s Violin Sonata No. 2 and Vitali’s Chaconne, recorded in October 1951 for broadcast. Like the Beethoven pieces, these were works in which De Vito excelled, and he performs them with grace and his polished technique. Vitali’s Chaconne is performed at a somewhat slower tempo. With rich, full bowing, she plays each note with soul; it is fair to say that another masterful performance has been added to this famous piece, which was performed and recorded by virtually every renowned violinist of the time.
