Handel’s Masterpieces “Water Music” and “Royal Fireworks” Brought to Life with Unprecedented Sound “Water Music,” premiered at a royal celebration on the River Thames in 1717, and “Music for the Royal Fireworks,” composed for a fireworks display held in London’s Green Park on April 27, 1749, are two of Handel’s greatest masterpieces that shine brilliantly. Led by Lux, Collegium 1704 performs these masterpieces with meticulous and delicate interpretations, unleashing a powerful sound without compromising elegance, and fully showcasing the true value of the works. It is a highly engaging performance where one can sense the attention to detail, such as the use of percussion that brings an involuntary smile to one’s face. The cover photo features the “Daphne” goblet (by Abraham Jamnitzer, 1579–86), a mechanical goblet depicting the water nymph Daphne transforming into a laurel tree to escape the sun god Apollo. ACCENT
