Yumiko Meguri and Stefan Hussong Works by Keiko Harada, played by two outstanding musicians A collection of works by the Japanese composer Keiko Harada, all of them shaped by an acute awareness of Fukushima. The performers are the world-renowned accordionist Stefan Hussong and the pianist Yumiko Meguri. F. Fragments received its world premiere on 3 November 2012. Harada herself has written that she "tried, in a state of heightened, conscious wakefulness, to commit to memory in these eleven fragmentary movements people I have never met, places I have never been, and the time that passed there." Piano and accordion sound together in extreme concentration, tracing sounds inscribed with the events and figures surrounding Fukushima. BOOK I (for accordion) was commissioned for, and given its world premiere at, the gala concert marking the 20th anniversary of the Akutagawa Award for Music Composition at the Suntory Summer Festival on 28 August 2010. The score asks for effects widely considered ill-suited to the instrument: rapid legato movement in a whispering tone colour, fast successions of multiphonics in a vertical, cutting timbre, impossibly long sustained notes held pianissimo through bellows control of the utmost refinement, and the use of the "mouth" (unvoiced sounds) in complex rhythms simultaneously with complex hand work. Hussong, master that he is, pronounced the piece "impossible" - yet Harada says there is nothing in his performance that falls short of her intentions. Nach Bach was written for Etsuko Tazaki's piano recital series NACH BACH and premiered in September and November 2004. Tazaki, who had conceived her programme around the Well-Tempered Clavier, asked for a work related to it; Harada responded by choosing, at will, either the prelude or the fugue from each of the 24 pieces and freely rearranging the pitch material of each subject, producing 24 movements in all. Most are homages to figures in the arts, and this disc contains seven of them: to Harada's three teachers, to the actress Mikari, to Le Corbusier, and to Meguri and Hussong themselves. Keiko Harada began composing as a small child, improvising at the piano. At the Toho Gakuen School of Music she studied composition with Manabu Kawai, Akira Miyoshi and Brian Ferneyhough, piano with Michio Mamiya, and chamber music (the works of Kurtág) with György Kurtág, completing the graduate research course in 1993. Since the mid-1990s she has written a large body of highly individual work built on the concept of "composing the performer's inner state in the act of performance". Her many honours include first prize (chamber music) at the 62nd Music Competition of Japan, the Akutagawa Award for Music Composition (2001, orchestral) and the Otaka Prize (2008, orchestral).
