A work every bit as captivating as Lebel’s piece of the same name. A colorful, grand-scale opera The “Four Elements” included here was a collaborative work by Detouche and Doraland, first published in 1721 (Lebel’s work of the same name—famous for its opening dissonance—was completed in 1737). Comprising five parts—“Chaos,” “Water,” “Air,” “Fire,” and “Earth”—this large-scale opera features a series of beautiful arias and dance pieces. The orchestration is particularly appealing, making full use of the characteristics and timbres of instruments such as the flute in “Water” and the recorder in “Air.” “Earth” features music at a leisurely tempo, with long, flowing melodies. The finale features a large-scale chaconne performed by the instrumental ensemble, providing a grand conclusion. The liner notes include the French lyrics along with English and German translations.
