Music of London circa 1740 - The best European masters of the time La Revue's new release is a program of music from London in the 1740s. The London of that time was Handel. The players Handel invited to play in his orchestra were all leading European virtuosos. They were also active as composers and brought a powerful wind of change to British musical life, including the popularization of musical instruments. The content of this exhibition is a reminder of the tremendous influence that existed around Handel at that time. Giuseppe Sammartini was a great virtuoso known throughout Europe at the time, and was the principal oboe player in Handel's opera orchestra. The works recorded here are among his most popular works to this day. The violinist Castrucci had worked with Handel since Roman times and moved with him to London in 1715, where he became concertmaster. Wiedemann (as he was known in England. Carl Friedrich Weidemann) joined Handel's orchestra around 1725.Not only was he a virtuoso flutist, but he also made a name for himself in composition, and the works recorded here are in the Gallant style, anticipating the works of the generations that followed him. James Oswald (1710-1759), a Scotsman, became the chamber music composer to King George III in 1761, while his best-selling collection of works based on Scottish folk songs (playable on flute and violin) made his country's music popular among London audiences. La Revue was founded in 2004 by Banjaman Perrault and Florence Bolton as an antique music ensemble of solo musicians, focusing on music of the 17th and 18th centuries.
