Dublin-based high-voltage folk metal band The Scratch was formerly known as Red Enemy. Three of the five members—Daniel Lang (cajón/percussion/lead vocals), Conor Dockery (guitar/backing vocals), Cathal McKenna (bass/backing vocals), formed the band with a new vision, and were later joined by Gary Regan (guitar/backing vocals) to form the current lineup. They switched from electric to acoustic instruments and began with jam sessions in their kitchen. The music born from this is filled with humor, sincerity, and overwhelming positivity. With a DIY spirit that doesn’t rely on equipment, they tour Ireland performing street shows. They gained attention on social media after a video of their performance at the 2017 Rory Gallagher International Festival went viral. In 2023, they released their second album, *MindYourself*, which debuted at No. 1 on Ireland’s vinyl charts. In 2025, they served as the opening act for the Dropkick Murphys, performed at the Download Festival, and had their music featured in the Netflix series *House of Guinness*, garnering significant attention.
Their third album, *PullLikeADog*, was produced in a Dublin studio by John "Spud" Murphy (Rankum, Black Midi, Caroline). The sound further refines the fusion of acoustic/electric and traditional/metal elements introduced on their previous album, *MindYourself*, marking a powerful new chapter for the band. The lead single “PullLikeADog,” which opens the album, kicks off with the kind of energy that feels like kicking down a pub door on a Friday night. It showcases their talent as a live band and their genre-defying creativity, reflecting their commitment to originality.
Vocalist Daniel Lang says of the track:
“It’s about not apologizing for simply existing, and letting go of the notion that you’ll get what you want if you just keep living by the book. It’s about seizing life with a blood-pumping intensity and raising your voice—all while poking a little fun at yourself.”
