Rattle's cycle of Mahler symphony recordings spans the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra, the Berlin Philharmonic, and the Vienna Philharmonic, beginning with No. 2 in 1986 and concluding with No. 8 in 2004. The new box features a live recording of Rattle's debut with the Vienna Philharmonic in 1993, No. 9, which was praised by Berlin's Zeitung newspaper as "one of Rattle's finest achievements" in 2007.
