Praetor was 38 years old when he recorded this piece. Six years prior to this recording, Prêtre had made a name for himself with his Paris premiere of Strauss' "Capriccio," and in "Samson and Delilah" he gives a colorful performance that is both delicate and powerful in the French style. Vickers is a wonderful singer and delivers a powerful performance of "Samson" as if he were a "strong and powerful man". Rita Gohl sings Delilah, a sensual yet scheming woman.
