Anlene Lenaerts, who enjoys worldwide acclaim as principal harpist of the Vienna Philharmonic, is joined on this album by a stellar lineup of soloists: Timothy Ridout, one of today’s leading violists, and Adam Walker—a virtuoso who became principal flutist of the London Symphony Orchestra in 2009 at the young age of 21—in this album. It is an ambitious work that shines a light on “French music,” a genre to which Lenaerts has devoted particular attention. Through the vivid and unique combination of harp, viola, and flute, this vibrant and unique ensemble breathes new life into the richly colored masterpieces left behind by the great French and Belgian composers. Starting with Debussy, the album features the “Sonata for Flute, Viola, and Harp”—a landmark work for this ensemble—as well as a superbly arranged version of “Prelude to the Afternoon of a Faun.” As for Ravel, the album features a trio arrangement of the “Sonatine” and a delicately crafted rendition of “Ma mère l’Oye,” which stands out for its beautiful imagery. Furthermore, it includes a carefully curated selection of lesser-known gems from France and Belgium: short pieces by Vierne, Ibert, and Jongen. The meticulous and graceful interplay among the three musicians is expressed with the highest level of technical mastery.
