Finnish master composer Sakari Oramo and the BBC Symphony Orchestra, whose Sibelius cycle at the Barbican Centre in London has been making a big splash, have been actively engaged in discovering and performing unknown modern and contemporary works since he became Chief Conductor in 2013, and have steadily deepened their relationship. Oramo and the BBC Symphony Orchestra will record "Symphony No. 2" by Florent Schmidt (1870-1958), one of the greatest French composers of all time! Florent Schmidt produced a series of masterpieces characterized by his masterful compositional technique, orchestration, and colorful and gorgeous harmony, as exemplified by "Psalm No. 47," "The Tragedy of Salome," and "The Festival of Dionysos. The "Symphony No. 2" was completed in December 1957, at the age of 87, and is a profound and romantic work.It was premiered in Strasbourg in June 1958, two months before he passed away, under the baton of Charles Munch, and is known as a masterpiece of his last years, receiving a great ovation. Oramo has conducted the BBC Symphony Orchestra in the British premiere of Florent Schmidt's "Antony and Cleopatra," so expectations are high for this "Symphony No. 2," which is truly a fully-fledged work!
