Nash Ensemble New Recording! The chamber music of Ferdinand Ries! The Nash Ensemble, founded in 1964, is the resident chamber ensemble at London's Wigmore Hall and features some of the world's top virtuoso musicians. The Nash Ensemble has recorded and performed over 300 world premieres and many other styles of music in a wide variety of orchestras, and is considered one of the finest ensembles in the U.K. The ensemble has recorded over 90 albums for Hyperion and other labels, and has been nominated for the British Gramophone Award and the BBC Music Magazine Award. In 2021, the ensemble also won the Gramophone Award for Contemporary Music for a collection of works by John Pickard. This album features chamber music in a variety of orchestrations by Ferdinand Ries, who was known as Beethoven's pupil, colleague, and friend.Among the many chamber music works written by Ries during his lifetime are the Piano Trio (No. 4), the "Grand Sextet" for piano and string quintet (the second movement uses an Irish melody known as "The Summer Rose"), the "Introduction and Russian Dances" for cello and piano, and the "Sextet" for piano and harp, which was popular at the time. Sextet," an unusual composition in which a piano and harp duo (or two pianos) is accompanied by clarinet, bassoon, horn, and double bass (or violin, viola, and cello). This is an excellent opportunity to discover the legacy of Ries, whose reputation as a composer is still in its infancy, but who has left behind some very fascinating music.
