The latest release in the French Baroque Series by the Concerts Spirituels, featuring the genius Hervé Niquet—a champion of French Baroque and a peerless revolutionary in early music—is Pierre Butay (c. 1655–c. 1717)! Butayé was active as a church musician at the Cathedrals of Troyes and Châlons-sur-Marne in France during the reign of Louis XIV, the “Sun King.” Composed in the “five-voice with instrumental accompaniment” style—rather than the Grand Motet style of Versailles that was popular in Paris at the time—his “Requiem (Mass for the Dead)” is Butté’s masterpiece. With the majority of his works now lost, this piece serves as a precious legacy of French Baroque music, offering a window into his musical style and approach. Here, Nique employs a clever touch—such as inserting instrumental versions of individual movements by Flemar, Charpentier, and Yugar—to bring out the full “power” of Boutier’s music.
