"Since conducting *Lohengrin* in 2010, Nelsons has appeared at the Bayreuth Festival for the fifth consecutive year this summer—marking his fifth appearance overall—and has established himself as a promising Wagner conductor set to lead the next generation. Nelsons has now recorded Wagner’s *The Flying Dutchman* with the Concertgebouw Orchestra. This new album, released by RCOLive, features a live recording of a performance held in May 2013—a time when the Wagner Anniversary was in full swing—at the Concertgebouw, the orchestra’s home venue renowned for its excellent acoustics. Since the performance was presented in concert format rather than on the opera stage, the sound quality is particularly outstanding. It is rare for the Concertgebouw Orchestra to perform in the orchestra pit, and given its long tradition, there are relatively few opera recordings by the orchestra; this makes this release particularly valuable. The role of the Dutchman is sung by Terje Stensvold, a veteran singer born in Norway in 1943. His years of experience lend a realistic depth to this role of solitude and anguish. Furthermore, the casting of established Wagnerian singers—Anya Kampe as Senta and Kwangchul Yoon as Dalland—adds to the recording’s appeal. The chorus features a formidable lineup comprising three of Germany’s leading ensembles: the Bavarian Radio Choir, the NDR Choir, and the WDR Cologne Choir. Other recordings featuring Nelsons conducting the Concertgebouw Orchestra include Shostakovich’s Symphony No. 8 from the 2011 Lucerne Festival, and a live video recording of Rimsky-Korsakov’s “Scheherazade” from the 2011 Lucerne Festival—performances that demonstrated a strong rapport between the artist and the orchestra—so we can have high expectations for the quality of this latest release.
