On the other hand, the demands on the singers are considerable, and while the opera is performed frequently, truly satisfying productions are few and far between. This recording is from a performance in October 2009 at the Verdi Festival, which has become a beloved autumn tradition in Parma. Leo Nucci, a veteran who was 67 at the time of recording, still received thunderous applause for his overwhelming portrayal of Nabucco, while Dimitra Theodossiou—arguably the finest prima donna singing Abigaille today— Dimitra Theodossiou captivates the audience with her powerful yet delicate voice, and Giorgio Surian, another veteran in the role of Zaccaria, delivers a deeply moving, understated performance—all contributing to an exceptionally high standard. While these major singers competed with one another, Michele Mariotti—the principal conductor of the Bologna Municipal Theater and a young artist who had just turned 30 that year—presented a fresh and distinctive interpretation of Verdi. In addition, Anna Maria Chiuri—who earned acclaim for her title role in Bizet’s *Carmen* at the New National Theatre in June 2002 and as Azucena in Verdi’s *Il Trovatore* that November—has continued to grow as a singer and is here portraying Fenena, and Bruno Ribeiro, a rapidly rising star from Portugal, takes on the role of Ismaele—ensuring that both young and established artists are well-represented. Daniele Abbado’s staging is the same as that used in the Ni-Kai-Kai production in March 2012. With the exception of a rotating giant stone wall, the staging is static, lending religious depth to this opera with its frequent plot leaps.
