From hypnotic ambience to mottled rhythms and chopped-up collages of field recordings, this beautiful masterpiece flows seamlessly through a rich world of layered textures! Mastered by Joshua Eustis aka Telefon Tel Aviv. London-based Loraine James has made a name for herself as one of the foremost exponents of electronic music and has established her sonic identity by blending sophisticated composition, gritty experimentation, and unpredictable, complex programming. While her works under her real name, released on the prestigious Hyperdub label, are often IDM-influenced, vocal-heavy collaborations, her alias, Whatever The Weather, reveals an impressionistic, introspective, gaze approach. On Whatever The Weather II, their second album, a rich world of layered textures flows seamlessly from hypnotic ambience to mottled rhythms to chopped-up collages of diary-like field recordings. The result is a uniquely fractured beauty born of a compelling combination of organic and human elements processed in a variety of digital and analog ways. Although she based the title Whatever The Weather on the "emotional temperature" at the time of recording, she notes that when she listens to the recorded work again, it often feels in a completely different place than the temperature on the thermometer. It is a quirk of the environment, and compared to the previous album and its Antarctic imagery, Whatever The Weather II is a warmer work. This is evidenced by the desert climate of the cover photo, again by Collin Hughes, and the packaging designed by Justin Hunt Sloane. Also common to both albums is the mastering work of friend and collaborator Joshua Eustis (aka Telefon TelAviv), who has a keen ear for complex sounds and creates a surprisingly three-dimensional sound experience. The album opens with "1°C," in which Loraine speaks, "It's a little chilly... I can't wait for summer to come," and layers of grainy sounds and scattered vocal samples emerge. This ineffable mood is carried over into "3°C," where high-frequency vibrations fly across the stereo field, powerful minimalist kicks shake broken speaker cones, and spacious synth harmonies burst forth and disappear into the fog. The longest track on the album, "20°C," daydreams over a clamor of conversation and minor key chords before blossoming into a series of glitchy, staccato percussion patterns. The "8°C" rides on a single wandering keyboard line, colored by minimal counterpoint. In these moments, Loraine effortlessly derives order from diffuse ideas, playful spontaneity creating a common thread. (1/2)
