The latest release from the Australian Chamber Orchestra, led by Richard Tonetti, is a Vivaldi album featuring “The Four Seasons”! Tonetti was born in Australia in 1965. After honing his skills in Switzerland, he returned to Australia in 1989 and appeared in several performances as a guest concertmaster with the Australian Chamber Orchestra. He was subsequently appointed concertmaster and went on to become the orchestra’s artistic director. With his exceptional technique and light touch, he masterfully performs a wide range of repertoire, from Baroque to contemporary. He has been awarded honorary doctorates from several Australian universities and was designated a “Living National Treasure” in 1999—a true prodigy born in Australia. He plays a 1743 Guarneri del Gesù, performing Vivaldi with a truly diverse range of tones, from sharp, robust bass notes to sparkling high notes. Tognetti and the Australian Chamber Orchestra have produced an extensive discography, including Mendelssohn’s Concerto for Violin, Piano, and Strings and String Octet (BISSA 1984), Grieg’s Works for String Orchestra (BISSA1877), and the Complete Violin Concertos by Mozart (BISSA1754 & BISSA1755), among others, all of which have been well received.
