Description:

John Coltrane recorded Blue Train in 1957 and left it as his only leader album for Blue Note, and it is an eternal classic. To commemorate the 65th anniversary of the recording, a complete disc, "Blue Train: Complete Masters," will be released, including the original album with the latest remastering and seven alternate takes. Four of the seven alternate takes included in the album are the first time they have been released in their entirety, making this a historic find. The monaural version of the original album will also be released with the latest remastering. This release is part of Blue Note's recent "Tone Poet" reissue series. Under the supervision of producer John Harley, who is also known as "The Poet of Sound," the original analog masters were carefully remastered by master recording engineer Kevin Gray. Of this release, John Harley said, "No studio experience compares to the thrill of listening to the original masters (mono, stereo, and alternate takes) of 'Blue Train'.I consider these two new versions to be the definitive editions of this masterful performance by John Coltrane." Ashley Kahn, who has also contributed new liner notes for the new edition, states in the liner that "'Blue Train' was a recording that the ever self-critical and reserved Coltrane appreciated...In 1960, during his last tour with Miles Davis, a Swedish DJ asked Coltrane what he liked in his catalog, and he immediately replied: 'Blue Train. Coltrane's favorite recordings in his catalogue, a Swedish DJ asked Coltrane. 'Oh, I like Blue Train myself. 'Oh, I like Blue Train, it's got a good band on it. In 1957, Coltrane was at rock bottom after being fired from the Miles Davis Quintet for heroin addiction. However, after an extended collaboration with Thelonious Monk at the Five Spot Café, Coltrane became sober and began to play passionately again. Blue Train" is a rare work of Coltrane's miraculous revival, a masterpiece of his early years that he himself is deeply proud of, and an eternal masterpiece that will remain in the history of jazz. This excavation is likely to be a truly historic event, revealing for the first time the full story of such a masterpiece.
