Description:

Schumann’s Complete Bach Unaccompanied Cello Suites with Piano Accompaniment! The long-awaited album is here! This collection features the complete piano accompaniment arrangements of Bach’s “Unaccompanied Cello Suites”—the least known of Schumann’s works. While recordings exist of the piano accompaniment versions of the “Sonatas and Partitas for Unaccompanied Violin,” the existence of the cello versions was previously only known. As one of Schumann’s final works, when Clara sought the opinions of Joachim and Brahms after his death, they advised against its publication, stating that the Bach score he had used was from an unreliable edition; consequently, the manuscript went missing. However, the complete work was published in the 1870s, while Clara was still alive, in an edition compiled by Wilhelm Stade. Although Stade was a close friend of Schumann himself—having even conducted all of his symphonies—later scholars and musicians continued to question the authenticity of his edition. Ksenia Yankovich and Jacqueline Bourgeois-Monuri, with the collaboration of composer Bernard Cavanna, carefully reexamined and adjusted the problematic passages in the Stade edition, recording the work while taking care to preserve Schumann’s stylistic consistency and musical language. Although the original piece is well known, it is colored by Schumann’s unique harmonies and leaves one in awe with one “eye-opening” moment after another. Ksenia Janković is a cellist born in Serbia in 1958. She studied under such illustrious masters as Rostropovich, Fournier, and Navarra, and won first prize at the 1981 Gaspar Cassadó International Cello Competition. In addition to her active career as a performer and recording artist, she is dedicated to period performance practice, which is reflected in this interpretation of Bach. Tokyo M Plus
